Multiple posts in one day.... What has gotten into this girl?!? Well, I suppose I have lots of stuff to catch up on, or maybe I am just procrastinating from writing thank you notes (again)...

Yesterday I had an appointment to get my hair chopped of (its shortish now). I was on my way when I caught the bridge. Boo. I was going to be late. Those who have cursed the Great Bridge bridge can sympathize. Once the %$@%@ thing opened again, I drove across and then had to turn left across the traffic that was still backed up on the other side....

Well, some girl in a Honda was trying to get out of the parking lot that I was trying to get into and didn't see the SUV coming in the middle lane and she zipped out and got herself broadsided. Hard. Right in front of me. Time started to move in slow motion as both cars slid towards me. I couldn't really do much about it so I just had to wait until they hit me. I closed my eyes and braced for impact.

There were lots or horrible noises but no big bang. After a few seconds, I opened my eyes and saw that the other two cars were literally wrapped around the front of my Pathfinder but not touching it. I mean inches away. The SUV was right in front of me and the the Honda had kind of slid around to the side of me. I tried to breathe while turning off my car and hunting for my phone. I got out of the car and called 911 to report the accident and went around see if the other people were alright (there were some broken bones and smashed glass cuts, Honda girl was pretty out of it).

As I was talking to the 911 operator, she mentioned that they had another report of a three car crash in that location. "What about the dark colored SUV?" the operator asked.... I explained that, other than somehow being in the middle of the crash, I wasn't hit. Talk about lucky. Pieces of the other cars were actually under me and had to be pulled out before I could back out of the accident.

After escaping (somehow) unscathed I had a really good excuse for being late to my hair appointment.

NI!

It has been "like" forever since I posted something. My bad. I do, however, have tons of great excuses... but I will spare you. I am back... and married (to the Boy). Worry not... despite this fact, I am still "Keeper's Girl."

So, as you may or may not know... I have been working (when I find the time) in Norfolk this summer. I do law type things in a big building. I have to park a few blocks away in a parking garage every morning and hike to the big building. Well, about a week ago, my morning jaunt was interrupted by two men on segways.

Now, it is not abnormal to see segways on the streets of Norfolk because Norfolk's finest chase bad guys down with them (like horse cops sans the pooping). However, rather than wearing badges, these gentleman were dressed as knights. Yes knights. The chain mail and tights type. Since Norfolk is not NYC, this was decidedly out of the ordinary.

They rolled their segways to a stop in front of me and one of them said "NI!" Now it was early, mind you, and it took a few seconds for me to connect knights and "NI!" Once I tuned in, I was unsure of what to do (especially since I had no shrubbery on hand). Luckily, the other knight took control of the situation and handed me a pamplet. Then they rolled away.

Evidently "Spamalot," the Broadway musical based on "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," is coming to town. This is very clever advertising. I just wish they had had some coconuts... but then again, I suppose it would be hard to drive a segway and bang coconuts together.

No Crying in the Airport

For Memorial Day weekend, the Boy and I flew to NY to visit the Boy's family. Upon arriving at the Airport on Friday, I stopped at the bookstore to pick up a book. I chose a book about dogs in honor of the Keep (who was very sad because I left him at home). Unfortunately, the Keep does not fit into the overhead compartments or under the seat.

The book was called Merle's Door and it is a kind of dog memoir (think Marley & Me only more scholarly). Intermingled with the tale of Merle and his person was an interesting history of the relationship between dogs and people. It had nothing to do with the law unless you count leash laws so it seemed like the perfect choice for a travel read.

Not so my friends.

On the way home, the Boy and I had a long layover in D.C. I decided it would be the perfect opportunity to finish the book. I got to the last three chapters without incident. Then, since dogs have life spans that are entirely too short, the dog got sick and died. Mind you, this was not a quick goldfish death... it was long (3 chapters).

Now, to be honest, I sometimes cry during movies and almost always during Grey's Anatomy. The cover of The Notebook DVD makes me tear up. When it comes to dogs, I am especially susceptible to waterworks. Those SPCA commercials with Sarah McLaughlin leave me sniffling. I cannot go to the pound without crying buckets. Before this weekend, the Boy found these emotional tendencies somewhat amusing....

The painfully prolonged death of Merle the dog made me sob. In the airport. At first, the boy found my sniffles amusing. This quickly turned to paranoia when other passengers began to shoot him dirty looks thinking that he was somehow the cause of my tears. By the last chapter I was an emotional wreck... the Boy tried to take the book away from me but the other passengers' don't-you-dare-upset-her-even-more glares kept him from accomplishing the task.

Then, right as old Merle breathed his last... an older gentleman approached the Boy (who was wearing a W&L t-shirt) and introduced himself as a member of the board of trustees of the college. The Boy informed him that we were both graduates, at which point he attempted to introduce me (still sobbing) to the bewildered man. The boy tried to explain that I was not normally a basket case and that I was, in fact, a very rational law student. The man looked scared and hurried on his way.

I am no longer allowed to read books about dogs in public places.

Random Ramblings

The monster that is law school exams has released me from its evil clutches and I have now returned to the happy land of blogging.

News you have missed in the past few weeks...

1) The Keep got a horrific haircut. I should post pictures but I love the Keep too much to submit him to that kind of embarrassment.
2) I have officially become a third year law student (supposing I passed my exams).

Pretty boring right. Now I am busily attempting to catch up on wedding planning, tv shows and movies, and sleep.

Tomorrow I am supposed to have wedding portraits taken outside which should be hilarious since the weather people are predicting 30 mph winds all day. Nice. Luckily, my dress is heavy enough that it would probably take an F5 to blow me away. But as long as there are no tornadoes, cyclones, or earthquakes I won't complain. Seriously... it seems like this is the spring of the natural disaster.... enough already.

On a natural disaster related note.... I don't really understand why it is such a big deal that the Burmese government won't let us pass out our own aid. I mean, if our goal is really to help the people who need the aid why do we care so much about who hands it out? After the mess we have created in Iraq... if I were running Burma/Myanmar, I wouldn't want to let us in either!

End rambling.

Shoes

I love shoes. It has a great feature called visual search - so if you see a shoe you like you can search for others that look like it.

Bridal Shower

This past weekend was my bridal shower and bachelorette party. It was amazing. Since this blog is available to the general public... I am going to say that the bachelorette party was really fun and leave the rest to the imagination. The shower was beautiful... My wonderful friend, Katharine, with assistance from Whitney and Dianne (games guru), hosted the shower at her home and it was beautiful to say the least! A big thanks all of my friends who came out to share in the fun!

See pictures, compliments of Miss Tessier:

I Don't Want a Cadillac

Cadillac has a new series of commercials that they have been releasing over the past few months. I saw another one last night and it got me thinking that the commercials make me very unlikely to buy a Caddy, even if I had a bunch of money to lay down.

Brief synopsis of commercials...
1. Kate Walsh (formerly of Grey's Anatomy) drives a red, sporty car and claims that it turns her on. She should have stayed on Grey's... if she was still working with McDreamy, she probably wouldn't need that car!
2. Lady driving a Caddy SUV says she doesn't care about cup holders. I mean, why in the world would anyone want cup holders????
3. Guy says that if you are tired of the petty "who drives what,"
you should buy a Caddy. Seriously... it is a Cadillac, not a Ford Fiesta. Does this make any sense to anybody???

What do these commercials tell me about Cadillac? I should buy one if I am shallow (3), unable to find a man (1), and not opposed to spilling drinks everywhere (2).

Hmmm. Surprisingly, I don't really want one.

Wedding Stuff

I feel like many brides spend way to much time thinking about itty bitty wedding details that no one else notices. For the most part, I have decided not to do this. For instance, I picked out the first wedding dress I tried on (my Mom made me try on a bazillion more anyway). I also picked out the first invitation I looked at in the store.

I just don't have the time or the patience to look at those kind of things for hours on end before ultimately deciding that I still haven't decided. Ridiculous.

However I did give the invitation wording some serious thought. I mean there are a lot of different ways to go, especially with the RSVP card.

I particularly like this option.

If I ever got a card like this I would think it was hilarious and I would probably remember to respond.

Things I like this week...

1. Movie - Across the Universe. Any movie based around Beatles songs is ok with me. Plus, Jim Sturgess is hot and has a great voice.

2. Music - Vampire Weekend - particularly Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa (with the help of The Boy's little brother I have been attempting to better my musical taste)

3. Easter Candy - It always tastes better in pastel colors. And there are Peeps. You cannot destroy Peeps and they never go bad. I have one.

I feel totally comfortable writing this because she refuses to talk to me and thus has no idea who I am and will never have any idea that The Boy and I refer to her as "crazy neighbor."

Let me tell you about "crazy neighbor."

First, she is freakishly concerned with the appearance of her lawn. This makes fall especially amusing. She constantly picks up leaves and pine straw.... and I mean constantly. I don't think I have ever noticed more than a leaf or two in her yard even when they are falling at a rate of 15 tons per second.

Second, she has a "gentleman friend" who is also an interesting character. The back of this friend's car says "holla at your boy." This sticker make me giggle every time I drive past the car. The gentleman friend also frequents the tanning salon where I have been tanning recently in preparation for wedding stuff.

Third, like most "crazy neighbors," ours comes complete with crazy pets. Small yippie dogs to be exact. The kind that can yip yap yip for hours when crazy neighbor puts them outside at four in the morning and leaves them there to yip the neighborhood awake. How can she not hear them??? This practice makes for cheerful mornings at our house!

Fourth, "crazy neighbor" refuses to speak to us if at all possible. Not very neighborly but perhaps a good thing considering the alternative.

I think most people have crazy neighbors... no neighborhood is complete without them. The Boy's parents, for example, have a crazy neighbor who really hates it when people park in the street across from his house. So much so, in fact, that he will come outside and scream foul language at you if you dare park in the forbidden zone. Rumor has it that he has also keyed some especially offensive parked vehicles. When we visit the soon-to-be in-laws, The Boy enjoys provoking this crazy neighbor and then calling the police on him when things finally get out of hand. Compared to this guy, our "crazy neighbor" seems pretty mild.

My mom has a magnet on her fridge that says that the only normal people in the world are the ones you don't know very well. I don't know "crazy neighbor" very well and I still don't think she is normal... but then again, the last time she let her dogs out to yip at 4 in the morning, I went outside and screamed at her for a few minutes until she finally let them back in. She and her "gentleman friend" probably call me the "crazy neighbor" now. Oh well. Once the word was out, the story became big news, leading the British military to pull the Prince out of Afghanistan for obvious safety reasons.

Seriously. Tacky.

No one was adversely affected by being oblivious to the fact that Harry was in Afghanistan (except maybe the terrorists). The media, with the obvious exception of The Drudge Report, were actually acting fairly admirably in keeping the story to themselves.

I am not the only one who thinks Drudge made a serious faux pas.

According to the Telegraph, Wikipedia users expressed their displeasure by changing the wikipedia entry for the Drudge report to read "irresponsible and ill-advised 'news' website that has seen fit to put the lives of many soldiers at risk by publishing reports of Prince Harry's deployment in Afghanistan".

Shame on you Drudge Report. Some aspects of my normal routine, including the Blog and sleep, were exiled to the back burner... my apologies to those of you who, as a result, became depressed and found it hard to get up in the morning.

Along those lines, today's post will be a tribute to another young woman whose life has gotten out of control of late... Pop Princess Ms. B. Spears.

I have a confession to make. I own every one of Brit Brit's albums. Sickeningly poppy pop music is my ultimate guilty pleasure. You may make fun of me... I am used to it. The Boy says that I have no musical taste. I don't really know what that means... clearly I have taste (I like certain things and not others) but my taste simply does not mesh with the Boy's taste. I think this might qualify him as a music snob. Who died and made him the definer of good music taste?

I try not to let my affinity for Britney's music pour over into a strange obsession with her personal problems, but even if one avoids the E! News Channel, it is hard to miss the drama! For instance, I went to D.C. last weekend and after successfully navigating the Metro (all by myself), I attempted to cross the street to get to the Starbucks (another guilty pleasure!). Half way across the street, I noticed a news ticker running across the side of the building in front of me. It said something along the lines of, "Insane Pop Star regains limited visitation with Baby Federlines." This struck my attention to such a degree that I stopped dead in the middle of the crosswalk to read it. I realized that this wasn't really the best idea a few seconds later when I was almost mowed over by a taxi. [Note to self... practice walking and reading]. Luckily, the "yellow ones" do stop, albeit late and with funny screeeeech noises.

In my defense, I am trying to branch out beyond Britney pop.... the Boy gave me Dance Dance Revolution for Christmas which has really helped to broaden my pop music horizons. The game is seriously fun, even for those who, unlike me, have highly refined musical tastes! If they made a DDR full of Britney songs, I would run out and buy it. This makes me think that I might have a problem.

Valentine's Day

Yesterday, I was lamenting the fact that I had not yet gotten the Boy anything for Valentine's Day. Don't worry, a friend said, Valentine's Day is a holiday for girls... you don't need to get the Boy anything but a card....

This got me thinking... is Valentine's Day really just a holiday for girls? I decided it was time for a history lesson....

According to History.com, Valentine's Day, which most people think started with some dusty old martyr name Saint Valentine, was actually another one of those old pagan holidays that the Church ripped off.

Evidently, it used to be some type of fertility ritual in Rome called Lupercalia. The Romans sacrificed a dog and a goat and then the men ran naked through the streets with bloody animal skins and smacked the women with them so that they would be fertile.

Now that is romantic.

So, I guess Valentine's Day really did start as a holiday for women! Now I don't feel so bad. I just hope that the Boy doesn't try to recreate the pagan ritual instead of presenting me with sparkling and/or flowering tokens of his affection.

Thanks Congress!

Boy... I am sure glad that Congress is hard at work solving all the big problems facing our country, like war, terrorism, the economy, immigration, taxes, and so on....

Wait... they aren't.

Instead, the House Oversight Committee spent all day interviewing a baseball player and his former trainer about whether or not the player had used steroids or human growth hormones. Honestly, is this a matter that really deserves Congressional hearings?

Who cares? I don't care. Roger Clemen's baseball success has little bearing on my life, while the big issues that Congressional Representatives were elected to work on, may effect me a great deal.

I hope that Congress goes back to doing more important things soon. I kind of feel like they are wasting our money and America's valuable time. Is it any wonder that Bush told the House no this morning when they requested more time to reach an agreement on the Protect America Act. Maybe if they spent more time on the important issues and less on baseball witch hunts, something would get done.

In the Dark

Last Sunday was a pretty windy day. I had to get up kind of early as far as Sundays go (9:30) in order to play flag football, so afterwards I came home and curled up on the couch to resume sleeping. [During this nap time... the Boy usually cleans the house so it looks nice when I wake up - isn't that nice!] My Sunday nap was interrupted, however, by a loud "POW" noise and then a weird little "Peeeouw" sound.... as the TV went dead. The power had gone out.

Now, to be honest, the power begins to flicker in Richmond if it even looks like rain, so I wasn't really alarmed. After all, it was early in the afternoon and really windy.... I decided to go back to sleep and hope that the electricity would be on again when I woke up.... kind of like how the house would be clean.

No such luck. When I came to, it was beginning to get dark. Luckily, the Boy was working hard and had built a lovely fire to keep me warm. He really is handy to have around!

Observation: Have you ever noticed that when the power goes out you can't keep from flicking the light switch to the on position when you walk into a room, even though you have a flashlight in your other hand because the lights won't work? I always feel dumb as soon as I hit the switch.

Back to the story.... After much deliberation we drove to the Walmart and cleaned out the candle section. The Boy lit all the candles and then the house looked quite cozy. One problem with candles is that it is really easy to catch things on fire. [Like your Sorority House for instance... oops!] I was pretty worried that the Keep was going to catch his fluffy tail on fire. The other problem is that candles do not really provide enough light to read by... especially if you happen to be reading law books... so I had to give that up pretty quickly. Darn. Life became painfully boring without TV or the Internet to distract me... I looked through the giant stack of wedding magazines my friend Katie gave me and watched half of a movie on the computer before the battery died. Then, I gave up on Sunday and went to sleep again.

Monday came and went and still no power... though to the power company's credit, they sent a whole army of "power people" to fix the problem. It was hard to drive down the street because there were so many power trucks. I learned that three houses down a giant tree had fallen and taken out both the power lines and a transformer. [Evidently that was the big "POW."] The "power people" had to go into our backyard to run a new line, and not realizing that they were back there (because it was dark), I let Keeper out to do his thing, at which point he was nearly electrocuted. Poor guy.

The worst part was that the people across the street from us had power. They were warm and happy, watching their reality TV shows, cooking yummy things and taking warm showers while we sat grumpily in our cold dark house staring jealously across the street. Needless to say, we ultimately decided to go to a hotel for the night because you can only go so long without taking a shower and we were well past that point.

Apparently, the power finally came on again in the wee hours of the morning. I know this because the power company was nice enough to call the Boy's cell phone and wake us up to tell us this wonderful news. When daylight came, we trekked home. Sure enough... the power has now returned but the hard-working "power people" managed to cut our cable and internet lines in the process. This book is amazing on a number of levels and you need to get started on it now because it is super long (over a thousand pages) and the movie, based on the novel, is scheduled to come out later this year.

As an English major and now a law student, I do a good amount of reading. Nothing I have ever read has influenced the way I think about the world to the same extent as Atlas Shrugged.

Atlas Shrugged is a mystery, a love story, an economic, political and moral philosophy and so much more all wrapped up in one, very long novel. It was written in 1957 by Russian Immigrant, Ayn Rand, but, in my opinion, it is just as relevant to today's society. It is the type of book that is hard to set down. Rand clearly articulates concepts you always thought about but could never piece together coherently. In short, I think it is brilliant.

Rand's philosophy, which the book sets forward, is known as Objectivism and it has quite a following, including some pretty famous faces such as Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and financial guru Alan Greenspan.

I don't mean to suggest that everyone who reads this book will love it. Those on the far left and far right of the political spectrum may take issue with some of Ms. Rand's ideas. If you fall into that camp but you are willing to explore ideas you don't agree with instead of ignoring them.... consider reading it anyway.

18-1

18-1 sounds so much better than 19-0. I went to a Superbowl party last night where only one person out of 15 was rooting for the Pats and only because he had money on them. Even he cheered for the Giants when they won....

I think the widespread support for the New York Football Giants had a little more to do with a widespread distaste for New England than the fact that the G-Men were the underdogs. No one likes big fat cheaters/womanizers/people who run up the score unnecessarily by keeping the starters in when they are up by 30 in the 4th quarter. No one wants a team like that in the same company as the '72 Dolphins.

For the record, I am not a Giants fan... I am almost the opposite. I root for "America's Team" (the Cowboys), whose season sadly ended when the Giants beat them in Texas Stadium (tear!). Despite this fact, I'd be willing to say that last night, the Giants really became America's team, if only for a night.

So, Congratulations and thank you to the NY Giants!

On a side note... if I were going to pay 3+ million dollars for a commercial, I would want to make sure it was a good one. The commercials, with a few exceptions, were pathetic. The only ones worthy of note were:
Gold: Pepsi's "Baby don't hurt me" - really funny but Coke is still better.
Silver: Budweiser's "Rocky" Clydesdale commercial - I love ponies.
Bronze: E-Trade Baby commercial. - Slightly creepy but memorable.
I can't even think of any others that are worth mentioning.

Hello, My Name is BRIDE

A few days ago, the boy informed me that he had an idea for our wedding. In order to humor him, I asked him to tell me about it, at which point I tuned him out and started thinking about more important things, like how long it would be before Britney got herself committed again (evidently not very long).

These profound thoughts came to a screeching halt when somewhere in the very small part of my brain that was still scanning his monologue for appropriate times to nod and say "uh huh," I realized that he had just said "name tags." Name Tags? I started listening again until I finally comprehended that the idea he was proposing included making our reception guests wear little sticky name tags. The kind that say "Hello my name is..." The kind that people think are funny to fill in with things like "drunk" or "stupid" or something else really clever and original that no one else has ever thought of before.

"Just think of how useful it will be," the boy said, nodding enthusiastically. " You won't have any trouble remembering the names of my 57 first cousins." Like that was ever a problem. I scanned the boy's face for any telltale sign that he was joking. Nope. Not a joke.

Later on, we decided to pick out food that we wanted to try at the taste testing in order to decide on a menu.... the boy flipped through the options and then asked where the pigs-in-a-blanket were on the list of choices. I laughed, thinking that maybe this time he was joking.... wrong again.

I began to imagine what my wedding pictures would look like if the boy was allowed to plan the wedding on his own...... I would be the one in the white dress, holding a plate of pigs-in-a-blanket and wearing a sticker that said, "Hello my name is BRIDE," while distant relatives named "Drunk" and "Stupid" danced in the background.

If, by some very microscopically tiny chance, the boy does get his way, I think that I would want something a little more creative than BRIDE to put on my name tag.

Right now I'm considering:

But I'm open to suggestions.

Gossip Girl

Blogging is kind of a big deal these days. For instance, one of my new favorite shows, Gossip Girl, is premised on an anonymous blogger chronicling and interacting with the a group of kids on the Upper East Side. This is interesting in light of the fact that the show is based on a series of books by Cecily Von Ziegesar that came out beginning back in 2002.

The show is great for a number of reasons. Besides being filled with really good looking people, it has amazing clothes. [I am a fan of most everything Blair wears]. The anonymous blogger aspect of the show is also interesting. It kind of reminds me of when I really wanted to know what Mr. Big's first name was on Sex and the City. Sometimes during the show I actually catch myself thinking, "Well since so-and-so was at the party when the blog post was published, she can't be Gossip Girl ." I thought I had it all figured out until I signed up to start this blog yesterday and I realized that my assumptions were based on bad facts. Evidently, you don't need to be at your computer to post to your blog. You can do this from your cell phone... who knew? Not me. Now that I know, I have to rethink my whole "identity of Gossip Girl" theory. Sadly, there won't be anymore episodes of Gossip Girl in the near future because of the writer's strike. In the mean-time I will blog and perhaps in a few weeks I will even be brave enough to try posting from my cell phone.... but don't hold your breath.

I have a blog.

Today I was doing some research for a paper I am writing in computer law. It will likely have something to do with the Internet. According to the paper I was reading, the Internet will be 25 years old this year. In light of the fact that I will also be 25 years old this year, I decided to celebrate the last quarter of the century with the Internet by starting a blog. Of course, the Internet and I have both changed a lot since 1983. We are both larger, faster, and more efficient. I must say, though, that to date I think the Internet may be beating me on the whole "changing the world" thing. I sincerely doubt that I can catch up, so instead of attempting to beat the Internet.... I am joining forces with it. Hence my participation in this whole blogging craze.

It seems like everyone has a blog and there is a blog about everything. I don't really care to read most of them. I imagine that not very many people will care to read this blog... maybe my mom?... but it can't hurt to try it and it will give me yet another way to procrastinate in the law library.

So to wrap up this first post, some thoughts about the world online:
1. Why the fascination with lower case letters? A lot of things online start with lower case letters... eBay, iTunes, and so on... perhaps this a way to distinguish a new form of media with new conventions from old print media where the rules of capitalization still apply. people don't capitalize anything when they send emails or instant messages either which i find slightly annoying. Seriously, hitting the shift key is just not that much extra work.
2. Can you imagine what school would have been like before the Internet? I can't. I try to imagine it sometimes when I walk around the law library and look at the books that no one really knows how to use. Sometimes older lawyers come in to use the books for research. They know how to do it. Perhaps I should learn.... that way if cyber terrorists ever manage to shut down the Internet, I will still be able to do enough research to figure out who to sue.
